Minor Permits (under 18 years)

People under the age of 18 years can not apply for a full licence. However there are special Minor's Permits available.

There are two types of permit, one for minors between the age of 12 and 16 years and the other for minors between 16 and 18 years.

Both permits authorise you to possess or use a specified firearm only under the supervision of a licence holder or person approved to supervise the use of firearms by minors for the purpose of receiving instruction in the safe use of the firearm or target shooting on an approved range. If you are under 16 years the instruction must take place on an approved range.

To apply for a Minor's Permit, an official application form must be completed and signed by the applicant, together with his/her parent or guardian in the presence of the receiving officer.  Following completion, the form should be mailed to the Firearms Services (GPO Box 1264, Hobart TAS 7001), together with the relevant fee or presented to a Service Tasmania outlet.

The application form is available below. Alternatively, copies are available from any Service Tasmania outlet.
