Application Stages

  • Completion of an Application Form and Personal Information Form (part of the package below). Included with this should be your resume and your response to the Essential and General Selection Criteria. This should either be sent or delivered to the Recruiting Services.
  • The application is processed and, if you are deemed suitable to progress to the next stage of the selection process, you will be invited to undertake the Police Employment Examinations, which includes a Job Suitability Test. The Employment Examinations are conducted on a regular basis at Hobart, Launceston and Ulverstone.
  • If you do not pass your Employment Examinations you may be eligible to re-sit. If you are unsuccessful in passing the re-sit you cannot sit again for 12 months.
  • If your Job Suitability Test evaluation does not closely match the profile of a general duties police officer, you will not progress further and cannot apply again within 12 months.
  • Following your Police Employment Examinations, you may then be invited to participate in an Assessment Day, which includes physical testing, interview, team exercises, role playing and public speaking. You will require a medical clearance to participate in Assessment Day, obtained at your own expense. Assessment Days are conducted at the Tasmania Police Academy every Thursday with five applicants participating.
  • If successful on the Assessment Day you will be required to undertake full medical, hearing and eyesight examinations at your own expense, and obtain your prerequisites i.e. Police Swimming Rescue Award (RLSSA) and Senior First Aid Certificate.
  • Applicants then progress to a Selection Pool from which selections are made for Trainee Course intakes.  Selections are based on merit and applicants are assessed on their applications and performances throughout the selection processes, and compared to other applicants within the Selection Pool.
  • Applicants progressing beyond Assessment Day may be invited to an Awareness Day to enhance understanding of applicants and family about the front line policing role, duties undertaken and possible effects on family life.
  • After the Awareness Day, suitable applicants may be offered employment as a Police Trainee and inducted into the Tasmania Police Service for 8 months of training.
  • Applicants should be aware that, due to many varying factors, the duration of the application and selection process will differ with each individual and should not be compared.
