Junior Constable Program Induction

Junior Constable Police College Program

The Junior Constable Police College Program (JCPCP) will be conducted in 2009.  This program will provide an opportunity for 20 Tasmanian college students to experience first hand the role of Tasmania Police. The successful applicants will perform paid casual employment for 16 hours per fortnight during school terms in a variety of policing sections. In addition to this, there will be one week instructional blocks at the Tasmania Police Academy during school holidays in February and December 2009, two weeks in total.

The aim of the program is for the JCPCP personnel to be placed in uniform and exposed to a variety of experiences during the course of their 16 hours of casual employment per fortnight to develop their awareness of the responsibilities of a police officer. This will not only occur in an operational setting, JCPCP personnel will be exposed to administrative matters relating to station management and numerous other functions assessed as being of benefit to the JCPCP personnel.

The existence of the JCPCP personnel is not designed to displace operational or administrative police; their role is strictly in addition to existing police personnel. They will not be used as an operational police resource and will be present primarily to observe and experience the operational role that police perform, and complete administrative tasks within a police environment.

The Junior Constable Police College Program offers significant opportunities for those who are selected to participate. To be eligible for the program, students must be in year 11 in 2009, and studying to obtain their Tasmania Certificate of Education (TCE). It is a priority for Tasmania Police that the students who embark on this program shall be fully supported to complete their college education and obtain their TCE, with pre tertiary English and Legal Studies being preferred subjects. The casual employment offered will be designed to fit around the studies of each individual and under no circumstances shall a student be expected to forego a scheduled class in order to perform their rostered duties with Tasmania Police. Flexibility shall be offered on an individual basis to ensure that the casual employment does not interfere with scheduled class timetables.

Tasmania Police has hosted a number of information sessions across the state, however if further information is sought, contact the JCPCP team at jcpcp@police.tas.gov.au, or contact them on the toll free number 1800 628680.
