Tasmania Police
Graffiti Task Force
The Minister for Police and Emergency Management, Jim Cox, announced the formation of a special Graffiti Task Force to combat a rising incidence of graffiti vandalism in Launceston.
Mr Cox said the task force was an initiative between Tasmania Police and the Launceston City Council in response to the problem.
“Illegal graffiti is a costly problem, with property owners forced to spend tens of thousands on cleaning up unsightly and often offensive graffiti every year.
“While police have had some success in cracking down on graffiti and charging several people with offences, it was clear that graffiti needed a broader response with police, the council and the community working together.
“The task force is aimed at not only investigating and apprehending people responsible for graffiti vandalism, but also identifying issues surrounding graffiti.”
Mr Cox said the graffiti crackdown would have three stages.
“The first phase of identifying specific areas prone to graffiti vandalism is already underway.
“Instances of graffiti will be photographed and documented to increase an intelligence base already held by police.
“Graffiti will be removed either by chemical agents or by painting over, and these areas will then be closely monitored for repeat graffiti.
“Police will be investigating incidences of graffiti in a bid to apprehend those responsible, and I urge all members of the community to report graffiti and information that may help identify perpetrators.”
Mr Cox said apprehended offenders would have the opportunity to assist in removal of some graffiti, as well as help identify areas for legal graffiti, such as the Launceston City Skate Park, where graffiti is encouraged.
“The project would also include opportunities for community groups and schools to become involved in painting murals in Launceston.
“Areas will be identified in consultation with the community to enhance the appearance of the areas and discourage graffiti vandalism,” Mr Cox said.
