Safety House Scheme
The Safety House scheme is established in Tasmania. From the pilot scheme which was first launched at Norwood Primary School in Launceston in 1984, there are now 75 community committees and schools participating in the scheme around Tasmania. Currently there are approximately 2,500 households and businesses operating within the State's Safety House scheme.
Around Australia there are over 300,000 Safety Houses. With the introduction of a national logo the community is able to clearly recognise the sign as representing a place of safety.
Children are taught in participating schools to recognise the Safety House logo (the smiling house inside the black triangle on a yellow background) as representing a place of safety. Before being accepted as participants in the Safety House scheme, applicants are checked by their local committee and Tasmania Police to ensure that the premises are suitable and the residents have no police record.
As well as assisting in the apprehension of those who seek to harm children, the Safety House scheme is a proven deterrent to potential child offenders. It also raises the community awareness of the problems facing children as they travel to and from school. It also gives children a feeling of security. Teenagers and elderly people are also vulnerable while away from home. They can also benefit from the Safety House scheme.
You can become involved in the Safety House scheme by becoming a Safety House Householder - If interested, please contact the Safety House Association of Tasmania.
