Sexual Assault Support Service
The Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) provides support, counselling and information to women, men and children who have been sexually assaulted at any time in their lives.
Our philosophy rests on the belief that sexual assault is an abuse of power and a betrayal of trust. We work from the knowledge that the abuser is always 100 percent responsible for the abuse and that most abusers are known to the people they abuse.
Support
The SASS provides support for recent assault survivors and works closely with police. The 24 hour service supports people who have been recently assaulted, providing support and explaining procedural elements. The SASS assists both the victim and the police so justice can be sought. Support includes accompanying people whilst they make a statement to the police, and following through the court process.
Counselling
Sexual assault is a deeply distressing experience and always disempowering. SASS acknowledge that the pain, problems and difficulties - both personal and social - which women, men and children may suffer as a result of being sexually abused can influence their lives in many negative ways. However, survivors can and do reclaim their lives back from the effects of a sexual assault.
SASS works with women, men and children through one to one counselling and groups to assist them to work through the negative effects of the sexual assault.
The service produces pamphlets and other resource material on sexual assault, legal issues and medical matters. SASS also trains students, professional and community members about sexual assault issues.
