Victims of Crime Service

While much attention had been given to providing police, courts and corrective services, it appeared that the needs of the victims were being overlooked. Victims of crime were too often seen to be neglected by the criminal justice system.

Governments realised this, and today, there are support services in every state of Australia and in many other countries. In April 1994, the Victims of Crime Service was established in Tasmania with offices in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie with affiliation to Victim Support Australasia, an umbrella organisation which acts as the representative voice of crime support service throughout the region.

What does the Victims of Crime Service do?

  • Provides initial emotional support and advice;
  • Assist victims who may need help to cope with trauma symptoms;
  • Refers victims to appropriate personal and community services;
  • Creates an awareness of the Charter of Victims Rights;
  • Assists victims through the police, court and legal process;
  • Informs victims of Criminal Injuries Compensation issues;
  • Provide information on the offenders progress through the system.

Tasmania Police was part of the initial steering committee to establish the Victims of Crime Service. Police officers carry referral cards of the Service and distribute them to crime victims as appropriate. There are police liaison officers in all districts who work closely with the Victims of Crime Service.
