It is the responsibility of a firearms licence holder or exemption holder to ensure that their firearms do not become lost or stolen or come into the possession of a person not authorised to have possession. Conveyance of a firearm must be in accordance with the provisions of the Firearms Act 1996 and Firearms Regulations 2006. Licence holders must comply with section 104 of the Firearms Act 1996 and regulation 12 and 12A of the Firearms Regulations 2006. Safety requirements for conveying prohibited firearms:

(Note: ‘Prohibited firearms’ is defined in Schedule 1 of the Firearms Act 1996).

  • The firearm is to be in the unloaded condition, with any detachable magazine detached from the firearm
  • The bolt or breech is to be removed from the firearm, if reasonably possible
  • A trigger lock is to be fitted to the firearm, if possible
  • If the firearm is not a pistol, it is to be conveyed in a locked receptacle that is of solid construction or made of timber that is at least 10 millimetres thick
  • The receptacle is to be fitted with a metal lock
  • The locked receptacle is not to contain any ammunition
  • Magazines are not to contain any ammunition, and
  • If the firearm is a pistol, it is to be contained in a locked receptacle preferably located in the most secure area of a vehicle (such as the locked boot of a sedan).

Safety requirements for conveying other firearms:

  • The firearm is to be in the unloaded condition
  • Ammunition is to be in a closed container, completely separate from the firearm
  • Magazines are not to contain any ammunition, and
  • At least one of the following requirements is to be met
    1.  The firearm is to be in a locked receptacle
    2.  The bolt of the firearm is to be in a closed container, completely separate from the firearm, or
    3.  The firearm is to be fitted with a mechanism that locks or disables the trigger or action, and prevents the firearm from being used.
