Eligibility 

To be eligible for the Tasmania Police Accelerated Training Program, applicants must: 

  • Have completeda minimum of three (3) years service from graduationas a police officer within Australia or New Zealand, be a current sworn member, or have been separated from an Australian or New Zealand Police Service for less than four years.
  • A member whose separation exceeds four years but does not exceed six years may still be eligible for the ATP if they have maintained a related law enforcement role or similar. 
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen or have permanent Australian residence status. 
  • Have a current driver’s licence. 
  • Have, or be able to obtain, a current First Aid Certificate. 
  • Have, or be able to obtain, swimming certification from Royal Life Saving Australia, or a Certificate of Swimming Proficiency through AUSTSWIM.  
  • Have a satisfactory police service record and be of good character. 
  • Be physically fit and healthy. Note the compulsory retirement age for Tasmania Police is 65. 

Selection process 

The selection process includes: 

  • Integrity/background checks to identify any criminal/traffic offences 
  • Review of any complaint history as a serving police officer 
  • Physical fitness testing 
  • Written job suitability testing 
  • Interview before a Selection Board 
  • Referee checks 
  • Medical checks 

Medical checks 

If you are successful at the interview stage, you will be given a medical assessment package to take to your General Practitioner (GP) to complete. 

This package will assess your current health, as well as previous surgery and medical conditions. 

As part of this medical assessment, you will also need to have your hearing tested by an audiologist, and your eyesight tested by an optometrist. 

COVID-19 vaccination is strongly encouraged, however you are no longer required to provide evidence of your COVID-19 vaccination status.

You may also be requested to provide specialist reports depending on your medical history. 

Medical checks and any associated costs are the responsibility of the applicant and are not facilitated by Tasmania Police.

Training 

The Accelerated Training Program runs for twelve weeks. 

It includes modules on Tasmanian legislation and Tasmania Police policy and procedures, as well as physical training and instruction on firearms and operational safety tactics. 

Posting 

Tasmania Police members must serve in any geographical location, according to organisational requirements. 

After successfully completing the ATP, members are usually posted to one of our 24-hour police stations in Hobart, Bellerive, Glenorchy, Bridgewater, Launceston, Devonport, and Burnie. 

These postings attract a 24% loading on top of the base wage. 

Probation 

Members are subject to a six-month probation period after graduation. Confirmation of appointment after probation is subject to a satisfactory Probation Assessment Report. 

Salary 

In determining pay banding level, previous policing experience will be considered, with a maximum level of twelve years’ service recognised.

  • Whilst training at the Police Academy the salary paid is at two pay bandings below years of experience, if not at the rank of Sergeant or above.
  • After graduating and during the six-month probation period, salary will be one pay banding below years of experience.
  • After the probation period has ended, salary will be in line with years of policing experience, up to a maximum pay banding of level twelve Constable.
  • At the completion of the probation period, a member may make application for salary advancement in recognition of approved tertiary qualifications in accordance with clause 8.5 – Annual Salary Increments of the Police Award.
  • Members who are at the rank of Sergeant or a commissioned officer whilst completing the ATP as a trainee constable, and during the six-month probation period after graduation, will be paid as a level 11 Constable.

Examples:

A Police Officer with five years’ experience post-graduation:

Training salary – level 3 pay banding $73,924 as at 1 December 2023

Probation period – level 4 pay banding $76,232 as at 1 December 2023 (plus 24% loading)

Post probation – level 5 pay banding $78,543 as at 1 December 2023 (plus 24% loading)

A Police Officer with fifteen years’ experience post-graduation:

Training salary – level 10 pay banding $90,095 as at 1 December 2023

Probation period – level 11 pay banding $92,400 as at 1 December 2023 (plus 24% loading)

Post probation – level 12 pay banding $95,661 as at 1 December 2023 (plus 24% loading)

A Sergeant or Commissioned Officer:

Training salary – level 11 pay banding $92,400 as at 1 December 2023

Probation period – level 11 pay banding $92,400 as at 1 December 2023 (plus 24% loading)

Post probation – level 12 pay banding $95,661 as at 1 December 2023 (plus 24% loading)

Salaries indicated are base salaries, once graduated and posted to a 24hr station a loading of 24% is added to the base salary. 

Rank 

  • Rank is not transferrable to Tasmania Police, but applicants may seek recognised prior learning, at the conclusion of a successful probationary period.
  • A determination as to where an applicant may enter the Tasmania Police promotional system, and under what circumstances will be dependent on the evidence provided by each applicant. 
  • Applicants must meet the standards contained in the Tasmania Police Promotion, Qualification and Accreditation Process to be considered eligible for an increment in rank or title.
