SES Media Release | Flood Update 0900 Tues 7 June

Tasmania has experienced some of the worst flooding in at least 40 years, with record rain falls and record river heights recorded in some locations.

Major flooding is occurring in the South Esk, Macquarie and Meander Rivers, with widespread localised flooding across the state.

In excess of 100 roads are closed across the state due to localised flooding and damaged bridges.

Eight flood gates are closed on the eastern side of the Invermay/Inveresk levee system and 3 at Longford.

We urge people to avoid all non-essential travel.

Residents are asked to remain vigilant and monitor the ABC as the emergency broadcaster.

Statistics:

Dwellings inundated:

  • 50 properties in Newstead
  • 20 dwellings and 15 businesses in Latrobe
  • 7 dwellings in Wynyard
  • 5 dwellings in Ouse
  • A number of properties inundated in outlying rural areas

What are we doing:

  • All available SES crews are working statewide to assist residents with flood affected properties (there are around 550 volunteers).
  • SES state and regional operations centres are active in Hobart, the North West, North and South.
  • We have had more than 350 requests for assistance since Sunday.
  • A number of people have been evacuated from their properties in the communities of Latrobe, Ouse, Newstead and the Meander Valley.
  • We’ve rescued several people from their vehicles when they have entered flood waters.
  • We’ve been sandbagging various locations including businesses in Latrobe and around the Ouse, assisting police in evacuating affected schools and responding to requests for assistance.
  • More rain is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday so we urge people to be prepared.
  • SES is being supported by TFS and is working closely with other agencies including the Bureau of Meteorology, Tasmania Police and Municipal Councils.
