Keith was a great man and always treated me with respect and would have a chat when he had time. He talked about his little puppy that he got a couple months ago only last week telling me how much he adored him and how he didn't go anywhere in the car unless he took his puppy with him . I missed cleaning around your desk this morning as their w. Sere no crumbs to vacuum up from your potato crisps etc . I honour Keith's service and his service to the community, but above all the loss to his family and friends. I know nothing I can write can take away the grief and pain of losing Keith, but just hope that the acknowledgment of my thoughts will be a sign of how much Keith meant to the Tamanian community and the wider policing family. Keith over the years you had been in the North West of Tasmania, our family had some contact with you and each and every time you were supportive, caring and quite clearly and empathetic person. You are going to be sadly missed. You would turn up just to let me know you were there and thinking of us. It goes beyond your job description. I hope your family can read all these comments at some stage and know what a unique human you were and I hope your passing will bring some awaking to the community and police as a whole that you we the best of us and we can strive to be more like you.

A friend, my husband's work mate and a true all round gentleman. I will never understand the events of June 16th 2025. All my love to your wife and family. Everyday my husband leaves for work I will always tell him how much he is loved. You should have never had to leave home on Monday and never returned. You touched so many lives with your humor, kind nature and love of lycra. Thank you for your service and your beautiful friendship. Forever in our memories

Thankyou Keith for your service to your community and for being a lovely human, always polite, always had time. The words sincere apologies don’t seem adequate to express the sadness the circumstances of your death has created. My thoughts go to your family, the colleague with you at the time of your death, the greater Police community, and the community you lived in. Your life, and the loss of it, has impacted more than a ripple on a pond, it has impacted far and wide.

So sad to hear about Keith. I was a friend of his at Launceston College back in 1985-1986, and regrettably lost touch over the years. I remember him as a thoughtful, decent, quiet-spoken teenager, who put up with our antics. He was the level-headed character in my social group, but he was fun, had a killer smile & we enjoyed making him laugh. Rest at Peace, Keith.
Rita & Terry Lynd

It was an absolute privilege to have worked alongside Keith at Ulverstone Police Station. He was a true gentleman — kind, humble, and the sort of man who genuinely wouldn’t hurt a fly. Keith’s love for his family was something he carried with pride. He would smile from ear to ear as he shared stories and photos, he was always so proud of you all. Keith died a hero in the line of duty, and my heart goes out to his beloved family, friends, and colleagues who are feeling the weight of this loss. From every comment I’ve seen about this officer he was a beautiful nonjudgmental soul, and the kind of police officer the world needs more of. Everyone should come home safe from work, especially those who put themselves in harms way to keep us all safe. A tragic and sad thing to hear. An Officer just doing his job.y heart goes out to the family and every other police officer who knew Keith. I can't be sure, but if it's the Keith I knew in school at Exeter District High School in the early 1980s, then I knew Keith as a bit of a computer geek...we both spent a lot of time in the computer room, trying to outdo each other on the commodore 64 and Apple computer programming. Maybe someone could let me know if Keith was a student at Exeter in the early to mid 1980s. I left Tasmania and joined the RAAF, so I have lost touch. My mobile is 0424924014 if anyone could let me know. Condolences to the family.

You served about as long as I have ...and we had been in the job the same amount of time when I was a new Customs Officer working with the North West Drug Squad with my drug detector dog entering homes with the desire to make the world a better place. You should still be here to continue doing that. Your loss will be a large impact on your colleagues in a small region but know in your honour they will fight hard for justice. RIP Officer

At this time these words seem hollow, to be honest there are no words that will help ease the loss and pain you are all going through. So I will not offer condolences, as after awhile they feel like nothing more than empty words so they other person feels better. What I will say is that I am so very sorry for your loss, that my heart and mind hurt with what you are facing at this time. Please know and understand that when I say every emergency service worker and volunteer are here for you all at this time. We understand how easily it could have been our families grieving at this time, as such we are grieving with you. Allow yourself to grieve at your own pace, there are no guidebooks for this, be kind to yourself and each other. Most important remember the good times, share those with each other.

I'm struck by Constable Smith's kind eyes, and how happy and proud he looks in his dress uniform. I'm so desperately sad that this happened and my love goes to his family and friends and colleagues, and those who knew and loved him best. To any person he had who are still waiting for him to come home. And to his community who he protected as a police officer. But mostly to those to whom he was simply Keith or Dad or mate, maybe Grandad or Pop. Please check in on his family, not just in coming days and weeks, but forever. Rest in love Constable Smith
Celia Ralston

To your family, loved ones, friends, and to Tas Pol as a whole, words cannot fully express how sorry I am at the loss you all feel, the hole that is in your lives. Keith and his partner were just doing that…their job. Again, a very sad loss for his family, Police family, Tasmania & Australia. . Sending our hart felt condolences to constable Keith smiths wife, children and family members, , we are very sorry you have lost your partner, farther, brother, son and all he was to each and everyone of you, I wanted to share these beautiful words by Sue Ellison On the fateful day We lose a soul Their sudden passing Takes its toll Of memories past Of lost opportunities Of regretful choices Of sad communities How do we go on Without their love How do we reach Their star above How do we replace Their presence and smile How do we go forward And make life worthwhile Day by day The trauma decreases Day by day Our heart increases As we reflect on their life Both the joy and the strife We pause, we ponder We cry, we wander We look for ways To cherish their existence Then ultimately sacrifice Our own resistance For they may be gone But they are not forgotten They live in our memories Selected often And in those moments They live again Thoughts can comfort And ease the pain So until it is our turn Let us live every year Let us grasp this life And be of good cheer Each life has its season And so many reasons Let’s learn the lessons And count our blessings By Sue Ellison

Behind the uniform was a man who understood that policing is fundamentally about serving others. Constable Smith’s 25 years of experience were not merely measured in time served, but in lives touched, communities protected, and the countless moments where his presence made a difference. He carried with him the trust of the Tasmanian people and the respect of his fellow officers. Constable Keith Smith's sacrifice reminds us of the risks that police officers face every day in service to our community. He joins the ranks of those who have given everything to keep others safe - a debt that can never be fully repaid, only honoured through our remembrance and gratitude. To Constable Smith’s family, friends, and colleagues in Tasmania Police, we extend our deepest condolences. Your loss is immeasurable, but so too is the legacy Constable Smith leaves behind. His 25 years of service created ripples of safety, justice, and protection that will continue to benefit our community for years to come. Constable Keith Smith's name will be remembered alongside Tasmania's finest - those who served with honour, courage, and dedication until their final moment. His sacrifice will not be forgotten, and his example will continue to inspire future generations of those who choose to serve and protect.

With 25 years of dedicated service to northern and western Tasmania, he was not only an experienced officer but also a respected and admired member of the community. I am so grateful. I don't know how to express how grateful I am to Keith Smith, to his family, his friends, and his colleagues. Our police service people sacrifice so much for our community and ask for so little in return. They are absolute Australian heroes. They contribute daily to maintaining or way of life and we depend on them for so many things we take for granted. I am shocked and outraged that this tragedy has happened to someone so undeserving. I am so sorry you have lost Keith. The injustice is so bitter and the loss so big. We are grieving for you and with you.

On behalf of the NZ State agencies, and more so our Policing family, and no doubt, on behalf of all States connected here, and our Federation board; to you and our Tasmanian family, you have our absolute deepest condolences.   Our Tasmanian Police family have a special place in our hearts, because you are the most recent hosts of our games that connects our people in sport. Many have great memories from March and have expressed so. To now hear of this tragedy brings up recent memories of lost colleagues in tragic circumstances, for many States, in recent years. Our own Matthew Hunt, shot dead, the anniversary of which is tomorrow (5 years). Still very raw, my point being, this loss of Keith for our Tasmanian family will be so for a fair while too.     Our Police Commissioner, Richard Chambers, has today posted to all staff about the loss of Keith. Hence I appropriately can now do the same. Our Commissioner is making waves in his calendar to attend Keiths funeral if he can. He is our patron for NZ Police Sport, he is an avid fan and will be competing in our annual August games in Queenstown [cross country]. He is well aware of sporting connections, and our Police family connections.        Take care of yourselves and your colleagues this week, particularly leading into the funeral for Keith. We are all thinking of you!   "Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui-a-Tāne" Which literally translates to "A tōtara tree has fallen in Tāne's great forest". Context wise: In Māori culture, the tōtara tree is a symbol of a great chief or leader, and its falling signifies the death of an important person.    Take care all.   Ngā mihi.               Inspector Stefan McIntyre [ MIntlSy (Intelligence), BA ] Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe Manager – Community and Partners SAM tables, MDCAT tables, AHPU, CRT, Mental Health lead, DHB Lead, Recruitment lead. On behalf of the Board of Crime Stoppers Australia and as a former Police Commissioner, I extend my deepest condolences to you and the entire Tasmania Police family following the tragic loss of Constable Keith Anthony Smith. To lose a member of the police family - particularly in the line of duty - is a heartbreak that is felt far beyond state borders. It reverberates through every policing jurisdiction in the country, touching all who understand the profound commitment and quiet courage that comes with wearing the uniform. There can be no doubt that Constable Smith’s long and distinguished career greatly contributed to community safety and wellbeing. His death is a devastating reminder of the dangers police officers face every day in the line of service. As someone who has spent a lifetime in policing, I know all too well the deep personal and professional impact such a loss has on colleagues, friends and the broader force. It is not just the grief - it is the shadow of absence that lingers in every briefing room, patrol car and moment of silence that follows. These are the hardest of times for any police organisation, but it is also in these moments that the strength and solidarity of the policing profession shines through most. Crime Stoppers Australia stands in support of Tasmania Police at this incredibly difficult time. While we may operate independently, our mission is deeply intertwined with yours. We share in your loss, and honour Constable Smith’s life and service with heartfelt respect and gratitude. Please extend our thoughts to Constable Smith’s family, friends and colleagues. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. With deepest sympathy, Ian Stewart AO APM Chair, Crime Stoppers Australia

Police officers are the people we turn to during some of the hardest moments of our lives. They run toward danger when others step back. They offer protection, reassurance, and strength when we need it most. As a community, now it's our turn to look after our police officers during this moment of immense tragedy.  We are thinking of every one of them today and over the coming weeks as we all process this loss. I am writing on behalf of Bob Brown Foundation to express our deep shock and sadness at the recent shooting death of a police officer in NW Tasmania. Like all Tasmanians, we were horrified by this awful news. We are fortunate to live in a community where these acts of violence against police are rare, but this does not diminish the tragedy of this death. Every single Tasmanian should return home safely at the end of a day's work, but this tragedy is a reminder of the unique dangers that police officers face.
