I will always remember Keith for his infectious smile and immense sense of selflessness. From the first time I met Keith, I felt his support and compassion and this continued throughout our time as colleagues and friendship. Keith's kind words helped me to better myself and to follow in his lead with compassion and empathy which has directly influenced my career. Thank You Keith. I will miss your smile, your sense of humor and the catch ups at work when we crossed paths on the frontline. To your wife, daughter and family, Thank You. Thank you for sharing such a kind, wonderful and selfless person with the world. Whilst your hearts break now, please take solace and remember; Keith will have a forever lasting effect on not only the Police and State Service employees that served with him, but the broader community as a whole. “A Hero’s Watch Has Ended” In memory of a fallen officer The sirens now are silent, The badge is laid to rest, A life once spent in service, In courage, stood the test. Each dawn you faced the danger, Each night you wore the weight, Of shielding those who wandered close To darkness, fear, and fate. You walked the line with honor, With justice in your stride, A quiet strength, a steady hand, With duty as your guide. No words can fill the silence, No tribute ease the pain, But in the hearts you’ve guarded well, Your memory will remain. For every soul you sheltered, For every wrong made right, Your legacy keeps burning Like an everlasting light. So rest now, brave protector, Your burden’s laid aside— We’ll carry forth your courage With every tear we’ve cried. Though taken far too early, Your spirit won’t depart— You live in those you’ve sworn to serve, A hero in our hearts.
Christine Rossiter

My most heartfelt condolences to Constable Keith Smith’s family, friends and colleagues. I couldn’t be in Devonport to join the hundreds of people who lined the streets to show their respect and support to family, friends and colleagues but I did watch the livestream of the service and contribute to the Police Legacy account for Constable Smith’s family. My heart breaks for everyone who knew Keith as it was so obvious how everyone who came into contact with him felt about him. I hope that everyone affected by this awful tragic incident can receive the support they need in the weeks and months ahead to be able to move forward. Thinking of our Police family as well and hope in time Keith’s colleagues will be able to look back at all the good memories and reflect on the impact Keith had on them all in his years as a Tasmania Police Constable. To all our brave Police officers I hope you can find the strength to keep doing the job you do so well and honour Keith’s memory by remembering all the wonderful attributes Keith used that made him the much loved and respected Police Constable he was. I am sure he would love to look down and see his kind, caring and respectful ways being passed on to the next generation of Police officers who are just starting their careers. It would be  lovely if in time an award could be given in Keith’s name , maybe at the academy during initial training or maybe in some other situation and time so that his legacy as an Officer continues within Tasmania Police into the future. RIP Keith. You certainly touched my heart and I never had the privilege of meeting you.

I'm so sorry for the loss of this beautiful human, Keith lived next door to me in a unit in king meadows, Launceston approx nearly 5 years ago, when he left for the west coast, I moved into his unit as it was a bit bigger than mine, and he gave me his number incase any mail I received I could let him know and he would come and collect if he was ever in Launceston, well a little story to tell you, the last time Keith came here to collect mail, he was in uniform and in his police car, well up the drive way he came with sirens and lights flashing, i rushed outside and here he was, i said OMG Keith people round here are going to talk, he said ol well I don't live here anymore (lol), just a fond and happy memory i will cherish about him, he truly was a true gentleman, kind and very approachable, harder worker and loved his job as a policeman and adored his dogs Lilly and Higgins which i was lucky to know as well, i used to feed them treats over the fence with Keith's permission as they cried a lot when he went to work so i would try to calm them down, he also came over one day to show me lily's ashes as she passed away, i wish u all the strength and love from all of us to carry on.. Keith was a very well loved man.. RIP KEITH and thankyou for your service.. FOREVER #2390

Beneath the flash of red and blue, A silent promise once rang true. A badge was worn with steadfast pride, Now echoes where the brave have died. Through siren’s wail and duty’s call, He stood for justice, gave his all. No fear could break that steady hand Keith; a guardian of this weary land. Now candles flicker, low and wide, The city bows with quiet pride. A soul has flown, the night turns still, But red and blue burn brighter still. Rest easy, Constable.

Keith's contributions to Tasmania Police, recognised through the Commissioner’s Medal and the National Police Service Medal, reflect the high regard in which he was held by his colleagues and the wider community. His loss is not only felt by the force but by all those whose lives he touched through his work. Please accept my sincere condolences. My thoughts are with Keith’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this incredibly difficult time. May he rest in peace.

As the sister of a retired police officer who served our community for 40 years, and having met a significant number of officers through this connection over the years, the loss of Keith a respected, caring and giving member of the force hit close to home. I have seen the toll that this profession can take, and Keith sadly has paid the highest price. No one should leave home in the line of duty and not return home. My sincere sympathy to Keith’s family, friends and work colleagues on your profound loss, and a heartfelt thanks to Keith on his service to the community. RIP.

To all current and past members of the police force, and to their families - thank you. It isn't said enough, although it should be. Thank you for the sacrifices you make to keep the rest of us safe. Thank you for being there to help when no one else is. Thank you for the time you spend away from your families in order to keep our families whole and together. I've taught my children to give you a wave and a thank you when they see you out and about. I wish everyone did the same. Sincere condolences to any member of the blue family who has lost a loved one in service, and especially to the Smith family in this instance. You are seen. You are appreciated. I'm so very sorry for your loss.

Central Coast Mayor's Message June 2025 Vale Constable Smith - Mayor's Message It’s with a heavy heart that I look back on the month of June and reflect on the tragic events that have deeply affected our community. This month, we lost not only a respected police officer in Constable Keith Smith but also a valued member of the Central Coast community. His death has sent shockwaves through Ulverstone, our region and beyond. As a Council, we offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at Tasmania Police. As I write this message, we prepare to honour Constable Smith’s life tomorrow, and while the funeral service itself is not open to the public, Tasmania Police have kindly invited us to join them in paying tribute to Keith as he makes his final journey. You’re invited to line Victoria and Reibey Streets from 3:30pm to pay your respects as the procession travels through Ulverstone. In the wake of this heartbreaking event, it has been deeply moving to see our community unite in support. A public memorial has been created at the Ulverstone Police Station, and many have paused to honour Constable Smith’s life and service. Others have generously donated to support his family. Our thoughts are also with the first responders who attended the scene. We recognise the trauma you may be carrying, and our hearts are with you. In times of sorrow, it’s the quiet strength of community that carries us through. As we remember Constable Smith, may we hold close the values he stood for: service, compassion and care for others.

For constable Keith Smith, thank you for your 25 years of brave service to the State of Tasmania, Rest Easy, you served the Tasmanian community well. "The Final Inspection" The policeman stood and faced his God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining. Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My church have you been true?" The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent, Because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep.... Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place Among the people here. They never wanted me around Except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't.....I'll understand. There was silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell." VALE Keith. I had the pleasure of meeting you many times since moving to NW Tasmania in late 2002. You were always polite, approachable and open. Professional and a fine representation of Tasmania Police. As a former Police Officer (SAPOL), and Law Enforcement Officer in many other divisions Nationally, LODD's are gut-wrenching and profoundly emotional. I trust your loved one's experience the profound love and support of (and from) the thin blue line at this time. R.I.P. Keith

It is with immense sadness that I write to you to reflect on the tragic death of Constable Keith Smith. I have my personal recollections of Keith and his service and I am sure that there will be a broad and respectful reflection at the service. At this time every single member of the Police Service, and all  past members, will be grieving with Keith’s family and no doubt thinking of the times when they were each involved in a potentially life threatening situation and then thankful that the outcome was not as devastating. I have memories of the impact that the death of a serving police officer had on the entire organisation and the deep sense of loss that was felt then. I am sure that similar feelings are now widely held and I am equally as sure that you will ensure that you and the entirety of the Tasmania Police Service will reach out in full support to Keith’s distressed family and to every colleague of his across the spectrum. At times like this the inherent dangers confronting police officers in the execution of their sworn duty every day are brought into sharp focus with the recognition that no matter how well trained, no matter how well equipped, no matter how well resourced, no matter how well supported, they are still vulnerable. Annette and I are not due back in Tasmania from overseas until the 6th July so will not be able to join what will be an extraordinary guard of honour on the day of the funeral. We will stop at that time on that day in our own quiet tribute to the career well served by Keith and with sadness at his tragic, untimely passing With a heavy heart, Regards
Erika Olson – Chargé d’ Affaires, U.S. Embassy
On behalf of the U.S. Embassy in Canberra we offer our heartfelt condolences concerning the tragic death of Constable Keith Anthony Smith. The thoughts of the entire U.S. Mission in Australia are with his family, his colleagues, and the people of Tasmania at this time.

If there is any solace, please know that your extended family - the members of the 12th/40th Battalion of the Royal Tasmanian Regiment, the 4th Brigade, and the broader Australian Defence Force community, feel Keith's loss keenly. We share a common bond with our policing family and we stand with you in solidarity during this challenging and difficult time. Hasten the dawn. Yours Sincerely

Thankyou Mr K Smith for your service and dedication in keeping our little state safe, you will be spoken of often and never forgotten, my sincere condolences to family, friends and all of The Tasmanian Police Force,
William Gracie
There are no words that can’t truly express my gratitude for your compassion and humanity. My wife would often say that you were the most understanding police officer she has ever met, and she meant it from the heart. You made our family feel seen and respected during moments when we needed it most. You are the kind of officer the Tasmanian Police should not only be proud of, but the new officers should aspire to emulate. For Keith's wife and family, especially his daughter, the hurt and grief you're feeling right now is so overwhelming, and no words will ever be enough. But know that your loving husband, father, son, and brother will never be forgotten. His legacy as a truly dedicated and compassionate police officer will live on in the hearts of so many as shown by the outpouring of comments. I understand the pain will remain, a quiet constant in your lives. But I hope that in time, the love and respect the community has shown, the unity sparked by this senseless and tragic loss. The honour of Keith’s memory will help ease some of that pain. His impact was real, and it will continue to make a difference, and this is from a family that has experienced Keith's compassion and faultless humanity. RIP, Keith, you can stand down knowing that you are what we expect of a Police. Officer. Lest we forget.

I am writing to express my sincere heartache and extend prayers to Keith's family, and the blue family. As an ex-police officer now, it breaks my heart to hear of injuries sustained by members in the course of performing their duties. The thought that someone is killed for doing their job is almost incomprehensible. The loss is real and raw. To Keith's family - I pray that you find support through this impossibly difficult time. I did not know Keith, but the social media comments from Police and the community clearly show he was a genuine, loving family man, and a dedicated police officer. To the Police family - I hope you are able to take time to process this injustice, comfort and support each other. Please know that every day that you put the boots on is a service to the community that does not go unnoticed by a great many of us. Our continued thoughts are with the North of the state through this tragic time. The Webster family

Constable Keith Smith stood tall and true, A shield between the dark and you. With steady hand and watchful eyes, He answered every call that cries. He wore the badge not for acclaim, But for the oath beneath his name. To serve with honour, calm and kind, A stronger heart you’d fail to find. No stranger to the weight he bore, He faced what others just ignore. And when the cost grew far too high, He paid it so that peace might lie. Keith Smith, your name now gently said, In whispered prayers and bowed head. Though silence falls where once you spoke, Your legacy will not be broke. For every soul you helped to save, For every road you calmly braved, We hold you in our hearts, and keep Your memory safe, your service deep. So rest now, Keith, your watch is through. This world is safer, thanks to you.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of Constable Keith Smith. With 25 years of dedicated service to the people of northern and western Tasmania, his unwavering commitment and courage stood as an example to all. The recognition he received over the years — including the Commissioner’s Medal, the 20-year clasp, and the National Police Service Medal — reflects a life devoted to the safety and well-being of others. Police are always at the frontline, risking their lives for the community. You are a true hero. I salute you, sir. To his family, friends, and Tasmania Police colleagues — please accept my heartfelt condolences. May you find strength in his legacy, pride in his service, and comfort in knowing that his sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Constable Smith.

So sad to hear about Keith. I was a friend of his at Launceston College back in 1985-1986, and regrettably lost touch over the years. I remember him as a thoughtful, decent, quiet-spoken teenager, who put up with our antics. He was the level-headed character in my social group, but he was fun, had a killer smile & we enjoyed making him laugh. Rest at Peace, Keith.

A tragic and sad thing to hear. An Officer just doing his job.y heart goes out to the family and every other police officer who knew Keith. I can't be sure, but if it's the Keith I knew in school at Exeter District High School in the early 1980s, then I knew Keith as a bit of a computer geek...we both spent a lot of time in the computer room, trying to outdo each other on the commodore 64 and Apple computer programming. Maybe someone could let me know if Keith was a student at Exeter in the early to mid 1980s. I left Tasmania and joined the RAAF, so I have lost touch. My mobile is 0424924014 if anyone could let me know. Condolences to the family.

You served about as long as I have ...and we had been in the job the same amount of time when I was a new Customs Officer working with the North West Drug Squad with my drug detector dog entering homes with the desire to make the world a better place. At this time these words seem hollow, to be honest there are no words that will help ease the loss and pain you are all going through. So I will not offer condolences, as after awhile they feel like nothing more than empty words so they other person feels better. What I will say is that I am so very sorry for your loss, that my heart and mind hurt with what you are facing at this time. Please know and understand that when I say every emergency service worker and volunteer are here for you all at this time. We understand how easily it could have been our families grieving at this time, as such we are grieving with you. Allow yourself to grieve at your own pace, there are no guidebooks for this, be kind to yourself and each other. Most important remember the good times, share those with each other.

I'm struck by Constable Smith's kind eyes, and how happy and proud he looks in his dress uniform. I'm so desperately sad that this happened and my love goes to his family and friends and colleagues, and those who knew and loved him best. To any person he had who are still waiting for him to come home. And to his community who he protected as a police officer. But mostly to those to whom he was simply Keith or Dad or mate, maybe Grandad or Pop. Please check in on his family, not just in coming days and weeks, but forever. Rest in love Constable Smith

Sending our hart felt condolences to constable Keith smiths wife, children and family members, , we are very sorry you have lost your partner, farther, brother, son and all he was to each and everyone of you, I wanted to share these beautiful words by Sue Ellison On the fateful day We lose a soul Their sudden passing Takes its toll Of memories past Of lost opportunities Of regretful choices Of sad communities How do we go on Without their love How do we reach Their star above How do we replace Their presence and smile How do we go forward And make life worthwhile Day by day The trauma decreases Day by day Our heart increases As we reflect on their life Both the joy and the strife We pause, we ponder We cry, we wander We look for ways To cherish their existence Then ultimately sacrifice Our own resistance For they may be gone But they are not forgotten They live in our memories Selected often And in those moments They live again Thoughts can comfort And ease the pain So until it is our turn Let us live every year Let us grasp this life And be of good cheer Each life has its season And so many reasons Let’s learn the lessons And count our blessings By Sue Ellison

Our deepest condolences to the family and work colleagues on the passing of Constable Smith on what seems a senseless act that we are still trying to understand. His photo reflects a gentle, kind person, which makes it even more difficult . To say we are stunned and shocked that this has occurred in our beautiful Tassie would be an understatement and may it never, ever happen again. Our family wish you all strength during this difficult time and into the future, take care. Xx

Behind the uniform was a man who understood that policing is fundamentally about serving others. Constable Smith’s 25 years of experience were not merely measured in time served, but in lives touched, communities protected, and the countless moments where his presence made a difference. He carried with him the trust of the Tasmanian people and the respect of his fellow officers. Constable Keith Smith's sacrifice reminds us of the risks that police officers face every day in service to our community. He joins the ranks of those who have given everything to keep others safe - a debt that can never be fully repaid, only honoured through our remembrance and gratitude. To Constable Smith’s family, friends, and colleagues in Tasmania Police, we extend our deepest condolences. Your loss is immeasurable, but so too is the legacy Constable Smith leaves behind. His 25 years of service created ripples of safety, justice, and protection that will continue to benefit our community for years to come. Constable Keith Smith's name will be remembered alongside Tasmania's finest - those who served with honour, courage, and dedication until their final moment. His sacrifice will not be forgotten, and his example will continue to inspire future generations of those who choose to serve and protect.

With 25 years of dedicated service to northern and western Tasmania, he was not only an experienced officer but also a respected and admired member of the community. I am so grateful. I don't know how to express how grateful I am to Keith Smith, to his family, his friends, and his colleagues. Our police service people sacrifice so much for our community and ask for so little in return. They are absolute Australian heroes. They contribute daily to maintaining or way of life and we depend on them for so many things we take for granted. I am shocked and outraged that this tragedy has happened to someone so undeserving. I am so sorry you have lost Keith. The injustice is so bitter and the loss so big. We are grieving for you and with you.

On behalf of the NZ State agencies, and more so our Policing family, and no doubt, on behalf of all States connected here, and our Federation board; to you and our Tasmanian family, you have our absolute deepest condolences.   Our Tasmanian Police family have a special place in our hearts, because you are the most recent hosts of our games that connects our people in sport. Many have great memories from March and have expressed so. To now hear of this tragedy brings up recent memories of lost colleagues in tragic circumstances, for many States, in recent years. Our own Matthew Hunt, shot dead, the anniversary of which is tomorrow (5 years). Still very raw, my point being, this loss of Keith for our Tasmanian family will be so for a fair while too.     Our Police Commissioner, Richard Chambers, has today posted to all staff about the loss of Keith. Hence I appropriately can now do the same. Our Commissioner is making waves in his calendar to attend Keiths funeral if he can. He is our patron for NZ Police Sport, he is an avid fan and will be competing in our annual August games in Queenstown [cross country]. He is well aware of sporting connections, and our Police family connections.        Take care of yourselves and your colleagues this week, particularly leading into the funeral for Keith. We are all thinking of you!   "Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui-a-Tāne" Which literally translates to "A tōtara tree has fallen in Tāne's great forest". Context wise: In Māori culture, the tōtara tree is a symbol of a great chief or leader, and its falling signifies the death of an important person.    Take care all.   Ngā mihi.               Inspector Stefan McIntyre [ MIntlSy (Intelligence), BA ] Ngāti Awa, Ngāi Tūhoe Manager – Community and Partners SAM tables, MDCAT tables, AHPU, CRT, Mental Health lead, DHB Lead, Recruitment lead. On behalf of the Board of Crime Stoppers Australia and as a former Police Commissioner, I extend my deepest condolences to you and the entire Tasmania Police family following the tragic loss of Constable Keith Anthony Smith. To lose a member of the police family - particularly in the line of duty - is a heartbreak that is felt far beyond state borders. It reverberates through every policing jurisdiction in the country, touching all who understand the profound commitment and quiet courage that comes with wearing the uniform. There can be no doubt that Constable Smith’s long and distinguished career greatly contributed to community safety and wellbeing. His death is a devastating reminder of the dangers police officers face every day in the line of service. As someone who has spent a lifetime in policing, I know all too well the deep personal and professional impact such a loss has on colleagues, friends and the broader force. It is not just the grief - it is the shadow of absence that lingers in every briefing room, patrol car and moment of silence that follows. These are the hardest of times for any police organisation, but it is also in these moments that the strength and solidarity of the policing profession shines through most. Crime Stoppers Australia stands in support of Tasmania Police at this incredibly difficult time. While we may operate independently, our mission is deeply intertwined with yours. We share in your loss, and honour Constable Smith’s life and service with heartfelt respect and gratitude. Please extend our thoughts to Constable Smith’s family, friends and colleagues. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. With deepest sympathy, Ian Stewart AO APM Chair, Crime Stoppers Australia

Police officers are the people we turn to during some of the hardest moments of our lives. They run toward danger when others step back. They offer protection, reassurance, and strength when we need it most. As a community, now it's our turn to look after our police officers during this moment of immense tragedy.  We are thinking of every one of them today and over the coming weeks as we all process this loss. I am writing on behalf of Bob Brown Foundation to express our deep shock and sadness at the recent shooting death of a police officer in NW Tasmania. Like all Tasmanians, we were horrified by this awful news. We are fortunate to live in a community where these acts of violence against police are rare, but this does not diminish the tragedy of this death. We acknowledge the vitally important role that police play in keeping our community safe and recognise that this job is always challenging and sometimes dangerous. Every single Tasmanian should return home safely at the end of a day's work, but this tragedy is a reminder of the unique dangers that police officers face.
