14 motorists caught speeding near Bowen Bridge

Bridgewater police detected 14 motorists travelling over the speed limit during a traffic operation in the Bowen Bridge area this morning.

Sergeant Rob Bessell said one of the drivers was caught travelling 100km/hr over the posted speed limit.

“Concerningly a 42-year-old man from Lutana was detected travelling at 180 km/hr in an 80km/hr zone.”

“Police arrested the man and seized his car and he has been bailed to appear in court at a later date.”

“We also caught a learner motorcycle rider travelling at 115km/hr in the same area.”

Bridgewater Acting Inspector Phil Curtis said he was disappointed so many drivers were caught doing the wrong thing.

“It is incredibly disappointing that drivers are not heeding the advice of police, especially given the tragic road crashes that have occurred around Tasmania recently,” he said.

“Speeding places drivers, their passengers and other road users at a much higher risk when a collision occurs.”

“Speeding increases stopping distances for vehicles and reduces the time a driver has to respond to risks that are encountered on the road.”

“It is alarming that the message is not getting through to some road users.”
