Fatal crash
At approximately 11.25am 20 June 2011 a two vehicle collision occurred on Railton Road, between Railton and Latrobe, which claimed the life of a 3 year old girl.
The collision occurred between a silver 1999 Holden Commodore wagon which was travelling towards Railton and a white 2004 Mazda van which was travelling towards Latrobe. It appears that one of the vehicles lost control in very wet conditions.
The Mazda appears to have impacted the left side of the Holden. The Holden has rotated after impact and as it did so, the rear quarter of the wagon detached from the main portion of the vehicle.
The child and also another adult male passenger were seated in the rear section that became detached. Both portions of the Holden travelled off the road and came to a stop in scrub down an embankment. There were also two females in the front of the Holden. The three adult occupants of the Holden were conveyed to the Mersey Hospital. Their injury status is not known. All are believed to live in Railton.
The driver of the Mazda was a 62 year old man also of Railton. He suffered leg injuries and was transported to the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie where he is undergoing treatment.
Police from Latrobe, Traffic and Forensic Services and the Crash Investigation Section attended the scene. The road was closed for about 4 hours whilst investigations were carried out and the scene cleared.
Police would like to speak with anyone who may have observed either vehicle to contact police on 131444. A coroner’s inquest has been opened in relation to the matter. Police will not release any names of those involved at this stage.
