Fatal Crash Midland Highway

A 27 year old West Launceston woman died as the result of a three vehicle collision on the Midland Highway at Lovely Banks south of Oatlands, at approximately 6.15pm on Sunday the 24th March 2013.

The crash has occurred on a stretch of highway where there were two north bound lanes (one an overtaking lane) and one south bound lane.  The opposing lanes were separated by double continuous white lines.

A blue 2011 Mercedes sedan which was being driven south bound by a 57 year old man from Mt.Stuart has crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and continued travelling south bound in the north bound overtaking lane.

At this time a white Toyota hatch which was being driven by the 27year old West Launceston woman was travelling north bound in the overtaking lane – overtaking a slower moving vehicle.

The Mercedes and Toyota have collided head-on.  Impact has resulted in the Mercedes veering into the western most north bound lane where it collided with the black Commodore sedan which was travelling north bound in the left of the two north bound lanes.  The Commodore was towing a vehicle on a trailer.

The driver of the Commodore, a 23 year old Rocherlea man and his female passenger were not injured.

The driver of the Mercedes and his passenger a 44 year old woman also from Mt Stuart were both injured.  They were conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital by ambulance.
