Fatal train collision
At approximately 1320 hrs, Saturday 5 May 2012, Tasmania Police were advised of a crash at the level train crossing on Wilmores Lane, approximately 50 metres east of the junction with Bishopbourne Road, Longford.
The crash has occurred when a west bound white Toyota Hilux dual cab utility has failed to stop correctly prior to the level crossing, skidding to a stop onto the eastern rail line. The driver appears to have attempted to reverse from the rail line, but the north bound train has collided with the front of the Toyota, forcing the it east and into a 180 degree rotation.
The driver has appears to have died instantly from injuires sustained from the impact.
The train consisted of four locomotives, 18 laden flat bed carriages and eight unladen flat-bed carriages. The driver and co-driver of the train, both from the Launceston area, did not sustain any physical injury.
The crossing is not controlled with warning lights or audible bell however a STOP sign at the crossing is is good condition and visible. An advisory sign is clearly visible 250 metres from the crossing along with clearly painted road marking advising of the rail crossing.
Weather conditions at the time was fine and clear, road was dry.
Police are seeking witnesses to the crash and they are asked to contact Tasmania Police on 131444.
