Medals and Commendations

The members of a taskforce established to investigate a series of serious crimes in Southern Tasmania are among those to be recognised for their service at a ceremony in Hobart today.

Between May and June 2010 Taskforce Dioxide was dedicated to resolving a series of crimes ranging from Armed Robbery and Assault, to the attempted murder of a police officer and a member of the public.

“The 11 members of the Taskforce demonstrated devotion to duty above and beyond the call of duty, putting their personal lives on hold during the investigation.  Their efforts resulted in all the crimes being resolved,” said the Commissioner of Police, Darren Hine.

Today their dedication will be recognised with the presentation of the Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation.

Senior Constable Josh Peach will also be awarded the Commissioner’s Certificate of Commendation in recognition of his skill, professionalism and courage in hazardous conditions during the rescue of a jet skier from a seacave at Waterfall Bay earlier this year.

“Despite the real threat to his own safety, Senior Constable Peach swam unaided into the seacave and rescued the exhausted and injured jetski rider,” said Mr Hine.

Long Service Awards will be presented to members of the Police Pipe Band, including Piper David Piles, who has served with the Band for 43 years.

National Medals and Clasps will be also be presented; they are awarded for long and diligent service to members of organisations that help the community during times of crisis.

The Commissioner’s Medal will be presented to officers who have demonstrated consistently strong performance along with high standards of personal and professional conduct.

“Police officers have a significant role in protecting and serving the community that is often unrecognised.  It’s important to acknowledge those years of dedicated service by police officers,” said Mr Hine.

The National Police Service Medal will be presented to officers who have served a minimum of 15 years of ethical and diligent service.  The award was developed in 2010 and is presented on behalf of the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Commissioner of Police.   The Medal is unique in that a high standard of ethical and diligent service is also required into the future.
