Operation Austrans
Tasmania Police is focussing on heavy vehicle safety as part of Operation Austrans.
Austrans is a national road safety operation. Jurisdictions across the country are working to enhance road safety by monitoring adherence to road and operational safety issues in the heavy transport sector.
Tasmania Police is working in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources.
Operation Austrans will focus on vehicle defects and the management of driver fatigue. Checks will be carried out on the Driving Hours Record, vehicle load and roadworthiness.
Police will also perform alcohol breath tests and random drug tests of heavy vehicle drivers.
“Operation Austrans is a campaign to raise awareness of safety in the heavy vehicle transport industry. Most drivers and businesses take their safety responsibilities very seriously,” said Inspector Darren Hopkins.
“All road users benefit from a safe heavy vehicle transport industry and Tasmania Police are playing their role in ensuring compliance with road safety legislation.”
A number of heavy vehicle traffic operations will be undertaken around the state in the coming days as part of Operation Austrans.
