Two incidents yesterday demonstrate the poor decision making of a small number of road users.

At 6:00 pm on New Year’s Day police intercepted a motorcycle travelling at 164 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Brinktop Road, Penna.

The rider was a 17 year old male learner. The rider was exceeding the restrictions of his licence by 74kmph.  He also underwent an Oral Fluid Test which returned a positive indication for Cannabis.

Another incident involving a motor cycle was detected on the Midland Highway, Symmons Plains.

A 17 year old first year provisional licence holder was detected travelling at 149 km/h, 69 km/h above the maximum speed for his licence conditions.

The rider received an on the spot penalty of 6 demerit points, a $900 fine, an immediate 4 months disqualification plus an additional  3 months suspension for excess demerit point accumulation.

Yet again Tasmania Police find themselves dealing with a small minority of the community who demonstrate no regard for other road users.

Motor cycles are an over represented group in serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes.  It is incredibly disappointing when riders place themselves at greater risk of being involved in a serious crash through such poor decision making and driving behaviour.

Tasmania Police will continue to be out in force to ensure the roads are kept safe for the large majority of the law abiding motoring public.
