Police conduct high-visibility traffic operations following Hobart Cup celebrations

Police have praised the behaviour of the majority of patrons who attended the Hobart Cup on Sunday.

During the event, police conducted more than 300 wand searches, with no weapons located.

Disappointingly, four people will be proceeded against after they were removed from the event following the detection and seizure of drugs by police.

No arrests were made, and police thanked the public for their support during the event.

Following the celebrations, members of the Southern Road Policing Services conducted both mobile and static traffic operations targeting drink and drug driving.

During the afternoon, police detected several motorists around the Elwick Racecourse area committing various traffic offences, including:

  • A 38-year-old woman from Herdsman Cove detected driving whilst disqualified and returned a positive Oral Fluid drug test.
  • A 48-year-old woman from Clarendon Vale detected driving while unlicensed and also returned a positive Oral Fluid drug test.
  • A 30-year-old man from Geilston Bay detected committing a minor traffic offence then returned a positive Oral Fluid drug test.

The drivers will be summonsed to attend court and will likely face a significant fine and a possible disqualification period.

Road Policing Services conducted further random breath testing, targeting traffic leaving the Goodwood area after the event, with more than 400 drivers intercepted.

During the high-visibility operation on the East Derwent Highway, disappointingly, police detected the following offences:

  • A 33-year-old man from Rokeby driving with alcohol in his system when he has zero blood alcohol restrictions.
  • A 45-year-old female from Lindisfarne driving with a breath alcohol reading of 0.126, she was issued with an on the spot fine of $820 and a 6-month disqualification from driving.
  • A 25-year-old man from Rokeby detected driving with cocaine in his oral fluid. Concerningly, he was returning from a music festival in the Launceston area, he will be summonsed to appear in court and will face a fine and disqualification period.
  • A 38-year-old woman from Bridgewater was driving while her licence is supsended, she will be summonsed to appear in court.

Police also detected 4 people not wearing seatbelts, and 2 unregistered motor vehicles.

Inspector Castle of Southern Road Policing Services said Tasmania Police will continue to conduct both high-visibility traffic operations and mobile patrols, targeting road users who are committing any traffic offence, with a particular focus on the Fatal Five offences.

“Police can be anywhere at any time and if you choose to drink or drug drive you will be caught,” Inspector Castle said.

“Drink and drug driving is a conscious choice that drivers make, their choices can significantly increase the risk of serious injury or death to innocent members of the public and changes people’s live forever.”

“Tasmania Police will continue to target the ‘Fatal 5’ over this coming long weekend in an effort to reduce the risk of any serious or fatal crashes occurring.”
