Police detect drivers using mobile phones during targeted Launceston CBD operation
Police detected 49 drivers using their mobile phones during a targeted road safety operation in Launceston’s CBD today.
Members of Northern Road Policing Services conducted the covert operation between 7.30am and 2pm on Friday 12 December, focusing on mobile phones and seatbelts.
In addition to those found using their phones, police detected eight drivers and passengers without seatbelts.
Sergeant Ben Kromkamp said it was incredibly disappointing that drivers continued to operate mobile phones whilst driving, particularly in heavy traffic areas.
“With Christmas less than two weeks away, we can expect to see an increase in drivers on our roads and pedestrians, especially in the CBD,” he said.
“Drivers need to turn their attention away from their phones and onto the road.
“Tasmania Police will continue to target the ‘Fatal 5’ in an effort to reduce serious and fatal crashes this festive season.”
