Police helicopter rescues

At 8:00am on Monday 17 October 2011 the Australian Maritime Safety Authority activated the Westpac Police Rescue Helicopter in relation to a SPOT beacon activation in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park.

A 47 year old Queensland man was walking towards the Overland Track in an area known as the Never Never when he injured his leg and required medical attention. In this instance the helicopter was able to land nearby and collect the patient who did not require hospitalisation.

Immediately after this rescue the helicopter was obtaining fuel from Derwent Bridge when it was reactivated, this time by Police, in relation to an injured bushwalker near Meander Falls.

A 20 year old George Town woman had dislocated her knee and was unable to walk. The helicopter was unable to land nearby but was able to winch a paramedic to the scene to treat the woman. The injured woman was then winched from the scene and flown to the Launceston General Hospital.
