Tasmania Police responded to two separate reports of recreational boats in danger in Great Oyster Bay close to Swansea at approximately 4pm on Saturday the 19^th of April 2019.

With the assistance of the members of the Freycinet Volunteer Coast Guard and their vessel, 5 males were rescued from the water approximately 1km north of Swansea after holding their vessel had capsized and they had been forced to enter the water. All five were wearing Personal Floatation Devices which had activated. They were checked by TAS Ambulance staff at the Swansea boat ramp and despite being cold all were in good spirits. Their vessel a 5 metre fibreglass recreational boat was recovered.

Around the same time a short distance away south of Swansea two males and a two females  on board a 5.5 metre Caribbean Cuddy Cabin were forced to enter the water after their vessel was swamped by a wave and later sunk approximately 40 metres from shore. They were all also wearing Personal Floatation Devices which activated. All four made their way safely to shore and were able to contact friends and alert emergency services. These people were also checked by TAS Ambulance staff and despite being cold all were in good spirits and did not require any further treatment.
