Rescue of diver and recovery of vessel – Sloping Main

At around 1:30pm Wednesday 11 December 2013, 2 men in their late 30’s were SCUBA diving off Sloping Island on the Tasman Peninsula, when their 19 foot fiberglass vessel began dragging its anchor in strong winds.

One of the divers observed this and attempted to swim to the vessel but was unable to prevent it from being taken with the wind.

The divers became separated with one swimming to Sloping Main, raising the alarm with National Parks and Wild Life staff, whilst the second diver took shelter on Sloping Island.

Local police were contacted and, with the assistance of the recovered diver, guided Water Police to his companion and the vessel which was by then stranded on rocks in the vicinity of Green Point. Both the second diver and vessel were recovered and were escorted to shore at Primrose Sands.

Due to the timely attendance by Water Police neither diver nor vessel suffered any ill effects from the incident.
