Fatal crash on the Bass Highway, Latrobe

At approximately 1025 hrs on Wednesday 24 November 2010, a three vehicle fatal collision occurred on the Bass Highway at Latrobe, approximately one kilometre east of the roundabout entry to Latrobe.

The collision occurred when a west bound white Nissan Truck lost control in the wet, spinning several times. The truck collided with an east bound white Holden Rodeo utility, causing minimal damage, before spinning into the path of an east bound silver Mitsubishi Pajero wagon.

As a result of the collision the driver of the Mitsubishi Pajero, a 38 year old Wynyard man, was killed instantly. The passengers in the Mitsubishi, a 33 year old female and 36 year old male both of Wynyard, were uninjured in the collision but were conveyed to the Mersey Community Hospital at Latrobe for observation.

The driver of the Holden Rodeo, a 65 year old Parkham woman was uninjured in the collision.

The driver of the truck, a 20 year old Devonport man was also uninjured in the collision.

As a result of the collision the Bass Highway was closed for a period of 4 hours whilst Accident Investigation Officers conducted investigations at the scene. Light traffic was diverted around the scene and heavy vehicles were allowed through the scene intermittently.
At the time of the collision there was very heavy rainfall and as a result there was a large amount of water covering the highway surface.

Tasmanian Ambulance Officers, Tasmanian Fire Service Officers including a Road Rescue Unit and D.I.E.R. Transport Inspectors attended the scene. Officers from Sheffield Police, Railton Police, Devonport Police, Western District Licensing Police, Western District Forensic Services, Western District Traffic Services and Western District Accident Investigation attended the scene.
