Guidelines for the release of police record information by Tasmania Police

Tasmania Police provides a consent based Police Record Check enquiry service for residents of, or employees based in, Tasmania. The Record Check is used primarily for the purpose of employment, occupation-related licensing, registration, voluntary work or personal information.

Tasmania Police does not conduct Police Record Checks for overseas applicants or for Australian immigration purposes. For these purposes, please visit the Australian Federal Police website.

Strict guidelines are applied to the release of all police record information to individuals and organisations. These guidelines set out the general provisions that apply to the release of police record information by Tasmania Police.

These guidelines do not apply to the release of information by Tasmania Police to other police jurisdictions and organisations with responsibility for law enforcement or the administration of justice.

Process

The Consent to check and release a National Police Certificate is available to download from this site, or in hardcopy from Service Tasmania outlets, and police stations. Fees and charges apply.

A Police Record Check will only be conducted once an application form has been completed, appropriate identification provided and relevant fees paid. All required documents must be emailed, or mailed to Criminal History Services.

Note: applications will not be processed until proof of identity has been provided and the applicable fees have been paid.


Concession rate for National Police Checks

Applicants seeking to volunteer for organisations may be eligible to receive a National Police Record Check for a reduced fee. All applications are assessed against approved criteria. Volunteers must not receive any payment for work and the work must be for charitable or community service benefit. To receive the concession rate, organisations must complete the concession rate application form.

National Police Check requests for volunteers should not be forwarded to Tasmania Police until the organisation is advised of the outcome of their concession rate application.


Privacy

Tasmania Police has a responsibility to ensure the privacy and security of personal information. Tasmania Police will not release information regarding an individual’s police record to organisations outside the sphere of law enforcement and the administration of justice, without the consent of the person.

Failure to provide the required consent or personal information will result in your application being returned to you unprocessed with a request for further details. Personal information will be managed in accordance with the Personal Information Protection Act 2004.
