Members of the public are encouraged to enjoy the action of this week’s Targa Tasmania event, but to do so in a safe manner and be alert at all times.

Targa Tasmania begins with a Prologue at Kayene and George Town on Tuesday 6 May 2014 followed by different stages of the event being held around the state until Sunday, when it finishes in Hobart on Sunday 11 May 2014.

“Targa is always popular with spectators of all ages and we encourage them to enjoy the event, but to also be mindful of the dangers that can be associated with any motorsport event,” said Inspector Shane LeFevre.

“Given the large scale of Targa 2014, there will also be some flow-on effects for motorists, who may experience road closures, as well as more traffic movement and spectators in their local area.

“Members of the driving public are urged to be patient and remain calm and give themselves more travelling time if they are likely to be affected by road closures,” he said.

Below are some tips for spectators as well as motorists who may be affected by some of the Targa stages.

Spectators:

• Don’t:
  • Stand on the road
  • Sit close to the road
  • Stand in front of objects which may prevent you from moving out of the way quickly (i.e. fences)
  • Stand in front of signs, and
  • Interfere with signs.
• Do:
  • Be aware of vehicles competing at all times (i.e. avoid distractions when vehicles are in your area)
  • Stay alert and stand in a safe location
  • Always closely supervise children
  • Listen for approaching cars and remain alert and
  • Obey officials – they have your safety in mind.

Drivers:

• Plan ahead so that you are not going to be delayed unnecessarily and risk being placed in a position where you may be tempted to hurry home or to your destination.
• Increase concentration as spectators and more traffic than usual may be moving and travelling around your area. Targa officials may also be placing safety signs and barriers on or near road-related areas.
