Serious Motor Vehicle Crash – Newnham

At about 4pm on the 29th April 2016, emergency services were called to 4 vehicle collision on the intersection of the East Tamar Highway and the Newnham Link.

Initial investigations indicate that a Nissan utility was travelling south on the East Tamar Highway when it has collided with a blue Subaru Impreza which was turning right from the Newnham Link. Two other passing vehicles have then been struck as a result of the collision.

The 18 year old male driver of the Subaru was extracted from the vehicle and taken to the Launceston General Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. The 62 year old male driver of the Nissan was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Road conditions were poor at the time of the crash, with heavy rain in Launceston for most of the afternoon. This is a timely reminder for drivers to be extra vigilant on the roads during poor weather conditions.

The East Tamar Highway was blocked for about 3 and a half hours while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Police have spoken with multiple witnesses at the scene, but anybody else witnessing the crash is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
