Motorists urged to take care in icy/snowy conditions

Motorists are urged to take care and slow down due to snowy conditions expected to be in force over the next few days, particularly Monday.

All road users are asked to obey traffic hazard signs and drive to the changing road conditions.

If applicable, road closure details will be available on the Tasmania Police website Community Alerts www.police.tas.gov.au/community-alerts/

Winter driving tips:

  1. Winter is a time for rear end crashes – cars skid on wet roads and stopping distances are greater in the wet than on a dry road/highway – so keep a safe distance from the car in front.
  2. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead – four seconds at least in poor conditions.
  3. Speed limits are maximums, not targets.
  4. Ice and rain make roads slippery, so drivers should take extra care.
  5. Drive with the lights on when visibility is poor.
  6. Always be alert and pay attention to road warning signs that display hazardous conditions.
  7. Tyres, wipers, headlights and demisters should all be in good condition.
  8. Ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and the tyres are in good condition and are correctly inflated.
  9. Do not drive through water across the road – the road may be damaged underneath.
  10. Do not drive if you think you may be over the alcohol limit.
