Police officer assaulted

A 41 year old Hobart man will appear in the Hobart Magistrate’s Court this morning charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, and breaching the peace.

Just after 11pm last night Police were called to a block of units on Liverpool Street Hobart, and provided advice to guests at a noisy party.  A short time later, around midnight, police were called back to the address to respond to a report of unruly behaviour.

Four officers attended on the second occasion, and two people, the 41 year old man and a 41 year old woman, were arrested for breach of the peace when they refused to comply with police directions.

During his arrest, the 41 year old man assaulted one of the officers by spitting in his face and punching him in the face.  The officer was treated at the Royal Hobart Hospital for a broken nose.

“The officer is recovering and will return to work in a day or so.  While we know policing can be dangerous, it is unacceptable that an officer is assaulted while undertaking their duties,” said Assistant Commissioner, Phil Wilkinson.
