What is Property Damage?

Property damage occurs when property belonging to you or another person is damaged or destroyed with deliberate, malicious or reckless intent. Property can include objects, fences, buildings, residences, structures, vehicles or vessels.

What can be reported online?

You can report Property Damage online if:

  • you are authorised to report on behalf of your business / employer.
  • you require a Tasmania Police reference number for insurance or reporting purposes.
  • you have evidence of the offender or vehicle including digital evidence (photo, video / CCTV).

What can NOT be reported online?

  • accidental property damage caused by the owner or through normal wear and tear
  • damage from attempt to gain unauthorised access to business/dwelling – contact 131 444
  • damage caused by fire – contact 131 444
  • damage caused by traffic crash, contact 131 444 or report at reportacrash.police.tas.gov.au
  • any single damaged item valued over $5,000.

What do I need to submit a report?

Before you make your report, make sure you have:

  • a current and valid email address or mobile phone number – you will need to validate your email address or mobile number when you begin your report
  • business details including business name, ABN, address and contact details.
  • details of the incident including but not limited to:
    • date and time incident occurred
    • location / address
    • details of item(s) damaged and circumstances regarding the damage
    • any witnesses
  • any evidence (photos/videos including CCTV footage etc.)

What happens after I submit a report?

Upon completion of your report you will receive a police report reference number. This reference number can be used for insurance purposes or for any further enquiries regarding the matter.

What police response should I expect?

It’s important to understand that police will only contact you if further information is required, or if there is an outcome such as an arrest.
