What is Theft?
When someone has taken your property without your permission, with no intention of returning it. Examples of theft may include:
- Property taken from your person without you knowing
- Property taken from a vehicle or vessel
- Property taken from your home or yard
What can be reported online?
You can report Theft online if:
- you are authorised to report on behalf of your business / employer
- you require a Tasmania Police reference number for insurance purposes
- you have evidence of the offence including digital evidence (photo, video / CCTV).
What can NOT be reported online?
- if you were threatened or any weapons were involved, contact Tasmania Police on 131 444
- if the total value of stolen property exceeds $20,000 or any single item is valued over $5,000
- if your house has been burgled, your vehicle, boat or registration plates have been stolen – contact Tasmania Police on 131 444
- theft from inside a store should be reported as Retail Theft
- if you are a victim of fraud, go to scamwatch.gov.au.
What do I need to submit a report?
Before making your report, make sure you have:
- a current and valid email address or mobile phone number. You will be sent a code to validate your email address or mobile number, before you can start your report
- your details including name, date of birth, address, contact details
- business details including business name, ABN, address and contact details
- details of the incident including but not limited to:
- date and time incident occurred
- location / address
- description and value of item(s) taken including identifying details e.g., make/model, serial or IMEI numbers.
- any witnesses
- any evidence (photos/videos including CCTV footage etc.)
What happens after I submit a report?
Upon completion of your report you will receive a police report reference number. This reference number can be used for insurance purposes or for any further enquiries regarding the matter.
What police response should I expect?
It’s important to understand that police will only contact you if further information is required, or if there is an outcome such as an arrest or recovery of stolen property.
