What is Retail Theft?

Retail theft or shoplifting is the theft of goods from a store during business hours.

What can be reported online?

You can report Retail Theft online if:

  • you are authorised to report on behalf of your business / employer
  • you require a Tasmania Police reference number for insurance or reporting purposes
  • you have evidence of the offender or vehicle including digital evidence (photo, video/CCTV footage).

What can NOT be reported online?

  • if you are not authorised to report on behalf of your business / employer
  • if the offender / suspect has been detained. Contact Tasmania Police on 131 444
  • if you were threatened or any weapons were involved, contact Tasmania Police on 131 444
  • if any single item was valued over $5,000 or the total value of stolen goods was over $20,000, call Tasmania Police on 131 444
  • items were stolen outside opening hours or were not displayed for sale. For example, storeroom items should be reported as theft and not retail theft.

What do I need to submit a report?

Before you make your report, make sure you have:

  • a current and valid email address or mobile phone number. You will be sent a verification code to validate your email address or mobile number, before you can start your report
  • business details including business name, ABN, address and contact details
  • details of the incident including but not limited to:
    • date and time incident occurred
    • location / address
    • type and value of goods taken, and any serial numbers if known
    • any witnesses
  • any evidence (photos/videos including CCTV footage etc.)

What happens after I submit a report?

Upon completion of your report you will receive a police report reference number. This reference number can be used for insurance purposes or for any further enquiries regarding the matter.

What police response should I expect?

It’s important to understand that police will only contact you if further information is required, or if there is an outcome such as an arrest or recovery of stolen property.
