Before you report
What can be reported online?
You can report the following crimes online:
- fuel drive off
- retail theft
- theft
- leaving without payment
- graffiti
- property damage
What can NOT be reported online?
Not all crimes can be reported online.
Related crimes that can not be reported online include house burglary, stolen car or registration plates, assault, family violence, and fraud. These need to be reported directly to Police on 131 44 or 000 if an emergency.
The online crime reporting portal is also not a place to report neighbour disputes like boundary disputes, barking dogs, etc. as these are council matters.
In addition, you can not report online if:
- the crime did not occur within Tasmania
- you are NOT the victim or authorised to report on behalf of the affected business / employer
- you would like to report anonymously
- you were threatened, or weapons were involved
- involved property value exceeds $5,000 for a single item, or $20,000 total value of all involved property
- the damage was the result of a fire
- the property damage was caused in an attempt to gain unauthorised access to a business or dwelling
- more than one type of crime was committed in the incident you’re reporting
What do I need to submit a report?
To successfully submit an online crime report you will need:
- internet access – go to www.police.tas.gov.au/reportonline
- personal details including, full name, date of birth and contact details
- a valid email address or mobile phone number to receive a validation code – this is essential to report and important if we need to contact you
- details/description of the incident, for example:
- date
- time
- location
- involved property
- witnesses
- digital evidence like photos, video evidence, CCTV footage etc ready on your phone or computer for you to upload
- something to record your police report number (pen/paper etc).
Can I report anonymously?
No. You can not report anonymously.
The Tasmania Police online crime reporting system requires validated contact information. This is to ensure that we can contact you about your report if more information is required or if an outcome has been reached (for example, your stolen property has been recovered). If you would like to report a crime anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Submitting a report
How do I submit a report?
- Access – To access the Online Crime Reporting Portal go to www.police.tas.gov.au/reportonline
- Emergencies – If your crime is a life-threatening emergency, if you are in danger, or if a crime is currently in progress call 000, DO NOT fill out this online crime report.
- Providing valid contact details – You must provide a valid email or phone number which will be sent a message to confirm it is valid before you can proceed. You cannon report anonymously through this portal. If you wish to report anonymously, please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
- Choose what crime are you reporting – Choose the crime you wish to report from the list; Fuel drive off, retail theft, general theft, make off without payment, graffiti, property damage.
- Enter details about the crime – Read the questions carefully and enter the requested information which is specific for each crime.
- Not Eligible to report online – If any details of the crime require further clarification from Police, you will be re-directed to contact police directly.
- Upload digital evidence – You can upload any pictures or video related to the crime, including CCTV footage.
- Police Report Number provided – If all information is entered correctly you are provided with a Police Report Number. Keep this as your reference or to use as part of any Insurance claims if relevant. You will not receive a copy of your report.
- Police Contact – Police will receive the online crime report and it will be processed. Police may contact you directly if more information is required or an outcome has been reached. For example, your stolen property has been recovered.
Why do I need to validate my email or phone number?
Online crime reporting requires you to provide your contact details which are validated through email or SMS. This is to so we can contact you directly if more information is required or an outcome has been reached (for example, your stolen property has been recovered).
What if I have evidence or CCTV footage?
If you have digital evidence or CCTV footage available, make sure that you have the file/s ready on the device that you are using to make your report.
When you make your report, a link will be provided so that you can upload relevant evidence relating to your report.
What happens next?
What happens after I submit my report?
You will receive a police reference number. Please keep a copy of this reference number for any future contact with Police regarding this matter.
Your police reference number can also be provided to your insurance company if you need to make an insurance claim.
What response should I expect from Tasmania Police?
If more information is required or an outcome has been reached, we will contact you via phone or email. This is why providing your current contact details is so important.
If enough evidence has been provided in the online crime report, we will investigate the crime. We will contact you if an outcome occurs such as if your stolen property is recovered. Otherwise, the information in your report will be filed and may be used in the future if more information becomes available.
The information you provide in your report will also be used to identify any criminal patterns in your local area and may assist in providing evidence that could contribute to more successful identification of criminals.
Can I get a copy of my report?
You will not be provided with a copy of your report, so you will need to record a copy of your police report number upon completion of the reporting process.
If more information regarding your incident becomes available you will need to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444, quote your police report number, and provide us with your new or additional information.
