Organisational Structure
Organisational Chart - (pdf format 62 KB) - A chart detailing the organisational structure of the Department of Police and Emergency Management down to the level of Commander.
Tasmania Police Officers serve a population nearing half a million people within four geographical districts. In addition to the geographical districts there are five support commands. These are located in Hobart and provide specialist police services and a range of support services to all districts.
Each district is divided into divisions with Commanders in each district having the responsibility for the delivery of policing services to their respective communities.
As part of the Department's requirement for increased accountability, Commanders have been assigned greater control over a range of financial management, human resource and administrative areas.
Answering to the Commanders are Inspectors, who in turn have Sergeants supervising the Constables that make up the majority of police personnel.
Executive direction and policy decisions are made at Police Headquarters in Hobart within a structure that includes the Commissioner (Secretary DPEM), Deputy Commissioner, two Assistant Commissioners and the Director of Corporate Services. The Commissioner of Police is the head of Tasmania Police and reports directly to the responsible Minister who is an elected representative of the people of Tasmania.
State Service and State Emergency Service personnel provide supporting services to the Department.
