Tasmania Police
Training
Trainees must complete a 32 week (approximately) course at the Tasmania Police Academy at Rokeby. Trainees are required to live in at the Academy from Monday to Friday. Generally the evenings are free for trainees to study or leave Academy grounds if desired. There are facilities for families to visit in the evenings, joining trainees for an evening meal. There are approximately three courses each year with 24 trainees in each.
The academic demands are considerable. There is an emphasis on law enforcement, customer service and the social implications of policing. There is an expectation that trainees will gain an extensive knowledge of:
- Selected Tasmanian legislation;
- Internal policies and procedures;
- Contemporary policing issues;
- Operational skills (firearms, driver training, etc);
- The laws of evidence;
- Report writing and preparation.
The curriculum is composed of 19 modules and trainees will undertake approximately 28 separate exams whilst at the Academy. Please feel free to review the course curriculum and modules.
Trainees will participate in a camping experience, attachments to police stations and an insight into other specialised areas.
On successfully completing the training course, trainees are transferred to Hobart, Launceston, Devonport or Burnie for a minimum of two years.
The current pay scale is available from the Recruiting Centre.
