A total of 21 firearms have been seized from a 67-year-old Northern Midlands man following a firearms inspection conducted by police officers from Firearms Services on Friday, 28 August 2026.

During a random inspection of the man’s residence, police identified several breaches of firearms legislation. These included firearms and ammunition being stored together, the absence of a functioning electronic security device, possession of two silencers (sound suppressors), and possession of an unregistered firearm.

As a result of the offences and concerns identified during the inspection, police seized 21 firearms from the licence holder. The man will be proceeded against by way of summons for the offences, and Firearms Services will review his ongoing suitability to hold a firearms licence.

Firearms licence holders have a responsibility to ensure their firearms are stored and secured in accordance with legislative requirements. A key requirement for licence holders who possess 10 or more firearms is maintaining a functioning electronic security device. These security measures are designed to protect firearms from theft, unauthorised access, and misuse.

Tasmania Police will continue to conduct regular inspections across the state to ensure firearms are stored safely and securely and that licence holders meet their legislative obligations.
