Brooker Highway traffic operation

Police intercepted 260 vehicles in a traffic operation on the Brooker Highway, Glenorchy this afternoon.

Sergeant Steve Dine said the operation was focused on mobile phone use, seatbelts, alcohol and drug testing and vehicle roadworthiness.

“This is what we do, it is part of our daily activity,” he said.

“We’re out and about all the time, on country backroads or major highways – we’re there.”

“We’re very focused on keeping people who are on the roads safe, but road safety is not just a police problem, it’s a community problem and we need everybody to play their part.”

While the majority of motorists intercepted today were doing the right thing, Sergeant Dine said that is not always the case.

“We had an operation up at Pelham recently where we pulled over ten cars, and we got two drink drivers from that.”

“Police are out on the roads every single day enforcing the road rules, but people can help us by reporting dangerous driving immediately on 131 444.”

“If anybody sees any untoward or dangerous driving activity we also have an evidence portal on our website where footage can be uploaded, but please don’t do anything illegal or unsafe yourself in order to capture that evidence while you’re driving.”

Results from today’s operation:

  • 260 vehicles intercepted for random breath tests and roadworthy inspections
  • 3 defect notices issued
  • 1 infringement notice for insecure load
  • 1 unlicensed driver
