Charges for Rare Bird Thefts

Two Devonport men will be charged in connection with the theft of $10,000 worth of rare birds from a bird breeder in Port Arthur.

But the 17 birds have not been recovered and police are appealing for information from anyone who may know where they are.

One bird, a Lutino Rainbow Lorikeet is worth $1,500 and is one of only about five in the State.

Constable Damien McVilley said:

“The birds were taken on August 26 when the owner was away from home.

“It is possible that someone has them but doesn’t know they were stolen.

“We’re keen to hear from anyone who has information about the theft or who thinks they might know where some or all of the birds are.”

The two men, aged 26 and 48, will appear in court at a later date.

Police would like to thank members of the public who provided valuable information that led to the identification of the two men.
