Christmas road safety message from emergency services

If you’re taking a road trip to be with family or friends to celebrate the Christmas season, Tasmania’s emergency services wish you a safe journey.

“Our emergency service workers are well prepared and on duty over the Christmas season; don’t let it be you who needs their help in a serious crash emergency,” said the Secretary of the Department of Police and Emergency Management and Commissioner of Police, Darren Hine.

Too many families spend Christmas remembering loved ones lost at this time of year.

“It is the time to plan family gatherings, holidays and time with friends; not hospital bedside vigils or funerals. Let’s aim to spare any more families from this future,” said Commissioner Hine.

“Take extra care and be patient while driving. There is not only additional holiday traffic on the roads, there are caravans, boats and trailers that will slow down your journey. You also need to plan ahead how to get home from Christmas celebrations if you’ve had a few drinks.”

Our message is:

  • Slow down and drive to the conditions
  • Pay attention all the time
  • Don’t drive while tired
  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Don’t drive after drinking or if you’ve taken drugs – it’s not just your life at risk.

Around the state, Tasmania Police will be targetting known hotspots for drink drivers and drug drivers.

“Police will be patrolling alternative routes out of towns and cities, targeting the back streets, rural roads and entertainment districts,” said Mr Hine.

“And remember that you could still be over the limit even if you’ve had a few hours’ sleep. Picking up your car too early in the day could mean you’re still affected by alcohol.”

“If you’re not paying attention, or you’re driving while tired, affected by alcohol or drugs, or speeding; you may be involved in a serious crash.

“Don’t ruin your Christmas with a decision to drive when you shouldn’t, or drive in a way that puts you, your family or others at risk,” said Mr Hine.
