Death of Man in firework incident in Birralee

Tasmania Police can confirm a man died at a Birralee property overnight after being struck by a firework.

The man, aged in his 50s from North-West Tasmania, became unresponsive after being struck by the firework and attempts to resuscitate him at the scene were unsuccessful.

Initial investigations suggest he was attempting to light the firework, which involved the use of a metal cylinder, and was struck in the chest and shoulder area during the explosion.

Police were called to the incident at midnight. Around 100 people were attending a gathering at the property. No-one else was injured.

The incident is being treated as non-suspicious and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
