Police and emergency services have responded to the derailment of a freight train carrying cement in Devonport this morning.

At 9.00am police received a report of a TasRail automated freight train which was anticipated to derail in the Devonport Wharf area imminently. Police and emergency services immediately dispatched to the area.

At 9.09am the train derailed on Formby Road, opposite the Post Office, around 100 metres from the Harbour Master Cafe.

Two pedestrians received minor injuries and were transported by Ambulance to the North West Regional Hospital.

  • A woman in her 20s sustained cuts and abrasions to her head after the train hit a fence and the fencing material struck her.
  • A Male in his 40s sustained a suspected broken elbow and cuts and abrasions.

Formby Road is anticipated to remain closed between Steele Street and Best Street for several hours while the Australian Transport Safety Bureau conducts an investigation.

People are asked to avoid the area until further notice while the investigation is undertaken and the scene is cleared.
