Dolphin Death Investigation – St Helens

St Helens Police, together with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment are investigating the death of a dolphin which washed up on Maurouard Beach at Peron Dunes, near St Helens this afternoon.

Police were alerted to the discovery around 5pm with initial investigations conducted with DPIPWE.  The dolphin sustained a number of small wounds which require further scientific examination to determine the cause.

Police and DPIPWE are also aware of a similar situation involving a dolphin found dead near Bridport.

DPIPWE officers advise that whilst the use of a firearm cannot be ruled out, there are a number of natural circumstances that may have contributed to the animal’s death, consistent with the wounds evident.
