Evade Police And Crash – Burnie

Police are continuing to investigate an evade incident in Burnie this morning.

Around 11pm last night a red Holden Crewman Ute evaded police on Simpson Street in Somerset. Police subsequently conducted a search in the area but the vehicle was not located at this time.

Around 8.20am this morning the vehicle was observed by police in the Wivenhoe area of Burnie. An attempt to intercept the vehicle was conducted with the vehicle again evading police. Vehicle Immobilisation Device was authorised with the vehicle last seen travelling east towards Penguin. The vehicle was sighted again travelling west back towards Burnie and was last seen near Old Surrey Road on the Bass Highway. The vehicle failed to negotiate the corner at Old Surrey Road and crashed through a fence into the Old Pulp Mill site and stopped. Witnesses at the scene saw two men running from the vehicle across the Bass Highway towards South Burnie Beach.

Police conducted a search of the area between the Beach and the Bass Highway utilising police personnel and the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (Drone). Two men were located in scrub and taken into custody without incident.

The Crewman Ute will be examined and an investigation into the manner of driving will be conducted.

Police would like to speak to anyone who has dash cam footage or saw the vehicle or men. Information can be provided to Burnie Police on 6477 7211 or 131 444.
