Fatal motor vehicle crash

At approximately 5.55pm yesterday evening, 16 November 2010 a fatal single vehicle collision occurred on the Murchison Highway, 4km north of Tullah.

A green 1993 Toyota Landcruiser wagon was travelling south near Farm Creek. The driver had just completed an overtaking manoeuvre and had moved back into his lane when the left side wheels of the vehicle travelled onto the gravel shoulder. The vehicle has then crossed back over both lanes of the highway before travelling off the western side of the bitumen.

The Toyota commenced travelling down an embankment and as it did so, commenced rolling onto its right. At this point the vehicle collided with a tree, killing the 42 year old driver who was the vehicles sole occupant.

The Toyota came to rest at the bottom of a near vertical embankment after it collided with a number of other small trees. A crane was used to lift the vehicle out onto the road and SES personnel were required to use cutting equipment to extract the deceased driver.

At the time of the collision the road was dry and the weather was fine and clear. The highway was closed until approximately 1.00am although traffic was periodically let through.

Accident investigators would like to speak to anyone who may have observed the vehicle prior to the collision to contact the Burnie Police Station on 6434 5211 or 131 444.
