Firearms seized in Southport following search

A 56 year old man from Southport will be proceeded against by summons with firearms offences following a search in Southport on Sunday.

As a result of information from a member of the public, the search was conducted and resulted in the seizure of 9 unregistered firearms, ammunition and some illicit drugs.

Senior Constable Nick Evans from Dover Police Station said information from the public was invaluable when it comes to firearms and illicit substances.

“It is important that you come forward and give police any information about these types of items,” he said.

“Unregistered firearms are a risk to our communities, and information from the public can help us get them off the street.”

“There is a permanent amnesty in Tasmania and unregistered or unwanted firearms can be handed in to police or licenced firearms dealers without any action being taken.”

“People should just ensure that contact is made prior to attending.”

“If you hold a firearms licence and have registered firearms at your residence, it is your responsibility to ensure your firearms are stored legally.” said Senior Constable Evans.

The man will be proceeded against for numerous firearms related offences and will be summonsed to appear before the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.

Anyone with information about illicit drugs and stolen or illegal firearms is urged to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
