Illegal Dumping at Hillwood

George Town Uniform police have recently charged a 36 year old Mayfield man following an illegal dumping incident in Hillwood, north of Launceston.

On 15 May members of the public reported witnessing a vehicle being used to dump car parts and furniture at a bus stop in Hillwood. The vehicle was reported to have quickly left the area when the witnesses approached. As it drove away it spilt further items along the East Tamar Highway creating a hazard for other road users.

Police intercepted the vehicle in George Town a short time later. It was identified as having an unsecured load as well as several vehicle defects. Enquiries established it was also being operated in contravention of an existing Vehicle Defect Notice.

The driver of the vehicle, a 36 year old man from Mayfield, has since been charged with a range of littering and traffic offences and is due to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on 22 June 2021.

Littering and illegal dumping damages the environment and detracts from the natural beauty of Tasmania. Incidents of littering can be reported to the Environmental Protection Authority via epa.gov.au or by calling 1300135513.
