Man charged over serious firearms offences

A 25 year old Longford man has been charged with a number of serious offences after he allegedly recklessly discharged a firearm into an address at Longford during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police allege the man was responsible for committing a series of offending in the Longford area over a number of weeks including motor vehicle stealing, evade police and firearms offences.

As a result of a coordinated and well managed response, members from Operator Raptor, Northern Road and Public Order Services, Longford Uniform and the Launceston CIB arrested the man after he failed to stop for police in a stolen motor vehicle just outside of Longford on Saturday night.

Road spikes were successfully deployed and the man was located in bushland off the Midland Highway, 5km north of Epping Forest.

Police allege the man was in possession of a stolen .22 rifle; believed to be the firearm used in the incident at Longford earlier that day.

The man was charged with 34 offences and detained to appear in an out of hours court session in Launceston this morning.
