Police have charged a 32-year-old man with armed robbery as investigations continue into an incident at the Ampol Service Station on Risdon Road, New Town, on Tuesday morning.

It is alleged the New Town man, who is known to police, entered the service station about 5:50am carrying a crowbar and demanded cigarettes.

A store employee was able to safely flee the premises and was not physically harmed.

Police allege the offender forcibly removed the store cash draw, which contained a quantity of cash, before leaving the scene on foot.

A swift and coordinated response by Hobart uniform officers resulted in the man being safely taken into custody a short time later at Cornelian Bay.

The stolen property was recovered and an investigation conducted by members of the South East Criminal Investigation Branch.

The man was subsequently charged with armed robbery and an unrelated stealing offence. He appeared in Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday and was refused bail.
