New Commanders appointed

The Commissioner of Police, Darren Hine, is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Commanders to the ranks of Tasmania Police.

 

“Officers at the rank of Commander provide executive leadership and direction at both district and agency level, ensuring the delivery of quality policing and emergency management services to the community,” Commissioner Hine said.

 

“I congratulate Commanders Stuart Wilkinson and Peter Harriss on their promotions.

 

“These officers bring a range of experiences and skills as Commanders within Tasmania Police, including leadership skills, strategic and tactical command, contemporary management practices and high level policy development and implementation.

 

“The calibre of the new Commanders demonstrates the high standard of professionalism, commitment to ongoing learning and development and to the values of integrity, equity and accountability we uphold as members of Tasmania Police,” Commissioner Hine said.

 

The new Commanders will take up their positions effective immediately:

 

Commander Stuart Wilkinson – Northern District   

Joining Tasmania Police as a Constable in 1993, Commander Wilkinson was appointed as an Inspector in 2014 and most recently has served as Acting Commander of Northern District for the past three months, and prior to that, Acting Commander of Western District.  Commander Wilkinson’s substantive role is the Detective Inspector of Devonport Criminal Investigation Branch which he has held since 2019.

A highly experienced detective with a strong background in investigation, Commander Wilkinson also took on the Police Commander role in managing the North-West response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Commander Wilkinson was also a senior investigator with the National Crime Authority in 2004.

Commander Wilkinson has a Bachelor of Arts with Professional Honours (Public Sector Leadership and Management), a Graduate Certificate in Applied Management, a Graduate Certificate in Business (Public Sector Management) and a Graduate Certificate in Police Studies.

 

Commander Peter Harriss – Strategy and Support

Commander Harriss joined Tasmania Police in 1987, and was promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2008. Commander Harriss has performed in a wide variety of roles across Tasmania Police, most recently being the Acting Commander of Education and Training. Commander Harriss’ substantive position is the Inspector of Sorell East Coast Division which he has held for the past 12 months.

Commander Harriss has also extensive experience in the areas of prosecution, drug investigation, criminal investigation and internal investigation.

Commander Harriss has a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Police Studies, a Graduate Diploma in Police Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Police Studies.
