New recruits on the beat

19 new police officers will graduate from the Tasmania Police Academy this morning and will be walking the beat to ensure the safety of festive revellers.

The graduates take up their new positions on Monday. The new Constables will be stationed around the state: 11 to Hobart, 5 to Launceston and, 3 to Devonport.

“I congratulate the 19 Constables and welcome them as sworn members of Tasmania Police,” said the Commissioner of Police, Darren Hine.

“I’m sure the communities they will be working in, will welcome the additional policing services during this busy festive period.

“The public face of policing is changing; we are more connected to the community we serve, through traditional media and our social media presence.

“The progress of these new Constables has been well documented and they have continually performed well under increased public interest,” said Course Director Sergeant Rod Stacey.

“It is good to note that the public have shown such a positive interest in their development to newly sworn Constables. They in turn have shown dedication and enthusiasm for joining a profession that takes pride in serving the community with integrity, equity and accountability. They are committed to delivering a high standard of policing services to Tasmanians,” said Mr Hine.

Former polar bear trainer, Constable Nikki Mackintosh will graduate as Dux of the course. She adds this accolade to a list of previous achievements including a post-graduate Diploma of Marine Science and a Bachelor of Science (Zoology).

Constable Mackintosh is a keen sportswomen, participating in multi-sporting events, scuba diving and horse-riding. She will also graduate today as the recipient of the Shaun Pullen award for Team Spirit.

Constable Mackintosh will start her policing career at the Hobart Police Station.

Runner-up Dux, Constable Christopher Lobb will also join Constable Mackintosh at Hobart Station.

Constable Lobb moved to Tasmania from Queensland where he was working with the Australian Defence Force. Chris also has a string of previous accomplishments under his belt including a Batchelor of Arts (Philosophy) and Diplomas in Work, Health & Safety and Security & Risk Management.
